Dumfries House Wedding Photographer

A day full of feeling, from the Tapestry Room ceremony and her mum’s speech to sunset portraits and a packed dance floor.

Kuda and Jamie’s wedding at Dumfries House brought together a beautiful setting, their favourite people and a party to remember.

Back at Dumfries House with Kuda and Jamie

I first met Kuda and Jamie at another wedding the year before. They loved the photographs, got in touch about their own plans, and a year later I was joining them at Dumfries House in Cumnock, Ayrshire.

It had been a few years since I’d last photographed a wedding here, and the difference when I returned was night and day. The care that has gone into the house and grounds is lovely to see. The restoration championed by King Charles and The King’s Foundation has given this place so much life, while keeping the character that makes it special.

For Kuda and Jamie’s wedding on 4 September 2025, it was a beautiful setting for a day full of feeling. A gorgeous ceremony room, space for everyone to enjoy drinks, those grand front steps and an Ayrshire sunset that arrived right on cue. Then there was the dancing. What a night.

The little moments before the ceremony

The morning photographs start with the details: Kuda’s shoes, jewellery, perfume and the stationery carrying their names. But it’s the time with her mum that I keep coming back to. Helping with the dress, sharing a laugh and getting everything into place before the ceremony gave us some lovely, unhurried moments.

Kuda’s dress was from Anne Priscilla Bridal, with alterations by Karen Rotchford. Moj Beauty and New Image Creations looked after make-up and hair. The clean lines of the dress and the pearl veil looked beautiful against the rich colours inside the house.

Outside, Jamie and the boys had time together in the grounds before things got underway. The kilts, from MacGregor and MacDuff, brought plenty of colour to the photographs on the steps.

A ceremony in the Tapestry Room

The Tapestry Room is such a beautiful place for a wedding ceremony. The tapestries, ornate ceiling and light from the tall windows give the room a real sense of occasion. With everyone gathered close, it still felt personal.

There was a brilliant burst of laughter as petals were thrown along the aisle, followed by Kuda arriving with her mum. Reverend Steve Clipston led the ceremony, and I kept moving between the big moments and the smaller reactions: a glance between the two of them, hands held tightly, friends watching from their seats.

After the vows and first kiss, we headed out to the front steps for confetti. The sweep of the staircase makes such a good setting, with the house behind the couple and their friends and family cheering them on.

Confetti, group photographs and time with everyone

One of the things I like about photographing a Dumfries House wedding is the variety close at hand. The front steps work beautifully for a photograph of everyone together, then there are the gardens and outdoor spaces for drinks, hugs and catching up.

We made time for the family groups and wedding party photographs, with plenty of laughter along the way. The bridesmaids raising their bouquets, Kuda putting on her sunglasses and those big hugs with guests all added something different to the story.

There are lovely spaces indoors too. For me, that makes a difference at a Scottish wedding: you want the day to feel good wherever everyone ends up. I’ll photograph what’s happening around you while keeping the organised photographs moving, so you can enjoy being with your people.

A speech from Kuda’s mum that stayed with everyone

The entrance to dinner was lively, with arms in the air and napkins waving around the room. The speeches then took us through just about every emotion.

Kuda’s mum gave such a moving speech. Her words were powerful, and there were people crying all around the room. This is why I watch the guests as closely as the person speaking. Kuda wiping her eyes, a friend quietly taking it all in, Jamie’s hug with her mum afterwards: those photographs hold the feeling of what was said.

There was plenty of laughter as well, and Kuda raising the microphone above her head is one of my favourite frames from this part of the day. The green walls, mirrors and soft lights made a lovely backdrop, but the expressions were everything.

An Ayrshire sunset and a wander through the gardens

We were lucky with the evening light. You can never promise a sunset in Ayrshire, but when it happens at Dumfries House it’s worth stepping outside for a few minutes. The warm sky over the house and fountain gave us a beautiful setting for a walk together.

We used the steps, the formal gardens and the paths, mixing wider photographs of the setting with close portraits under Kuda’s veil. I love the change of pace in these pictures: a quiet moment nose to nose, then Kuda laughing as Jamie leaned in.

The portraits became more playful as we went. There was walking, laughing and plenty of movement in the dress. As the daylight faded, a little flash gave the photographs a different energy. Kuda lifting and swirling the skirt in front of the house was a brilliant way to finish before heading back to the party.

Dancing, a dress change and a sparkler send-off

The dancing was unbelievable. From the first dance to everyone joining in, there was so much happening: friends singing together, hands in the air and people of every generation on the floor.

Kuda changed into a short dress for the evening and was straight back into it. Tim2soxx was the MC and DJ, and the photographs say plenty about the atmosphere.

We finished outside with sparklers, laughter and a kiss in the middle of everyone. I love the golden blur of a sparkler close to the lens, with the two of them surrounded by their guests. Kuda and Jamie, thank you for having me along. It was so good to see you again and photograph a day with this much heart.

Planning your wedding photographs at Dumfries House

Dumfries House is near Cumnock in Ayrshire, in south-west Scotland. The house, formal gardens, fountain and wooded paths give us a lovely range of settings without needing to leave the estate.

Where are the best places for photographs?

The front staircase is a favourite for group photographs and portraits that show the house. Around the fountain and gardens, we can make wider photographs of the setting and find quieter spots for the two of you. I’ll choose locations around the light, weather and access on your day.

How much time should we allow?

A short list of your most important family groups helps us keep things relaxed. For couple photographs, I like a short wander rather than one long session. If the evening light is lovely, we can pop outside again for a few minutes. We’ll plan this around your ceremony, meal and time with guests.

What happens if it rains?

The interiors offer plenty of character and window light. We can work indoors and use any dry spells that come along, in coordination with the venue team. Your photographs can tell a wonderful story whatever the weather does.

What is changing at the venue?

These photographs show Kuda and Jamie’s September 2025 wedding. As of October 2026, Dumfries House is building The King’s Hall, with the venue advertising wedding bookings from July 2027. It will replace the Pavilion reception space shown here. Check the venue’s current wedding information for the spaces and arrangements available for your date.

If you’re looking for a Dumfries House wedding photographer who will capture both the setting and the people, tell me about your plans. I’d love to hear from you.
