Looking for relaxed wedding photography at The Cow Shed Crail? I’m John. I love catching the laughs, the emotional bits and everyone enjoying themselves, with a wee bit of time for portraits of the two of you.

Peter & Flaura’s day was a brilliant introduction to this barn wedding venue in the East Neuk of Fife. An outdoor ceremony in the stone courtyard, photographs beside the fields and a ceilidh that absolutely went for it. Have a look through their day below.

Peter and Flaura’s day

What I loved about this day was the mix of emotion and pure fun. There were moments to pause and take it all in, followed by big laughs and a party that kept everyone moving. Peter & Flaura had such a great crowd around them, and that comes through in the photographs.

Why I love photographing weddings at The Cow Shed Crail

The couple walk arm in arm through the stone courtyard, the bride carrying her bouquet.

This was my first time photographing a wedding at The Cow Shed Crail, and what a place. The stone buildings, little corners and open grounds gave us so much to work with. I loved being able to move between the courtyard and the surrounding landscape for very different photographs without losing the feel of the day.

We didn’t make it down to Crail harbour this time. Instead, we made the most of the venue itself, from portraits beside the old stone walls to a few quiet minutes out by the fields. It is somewhere I would love to photograph again.

An outdoor ceremony with Alex

The outdoor ceremony with Alex Moore was a highlight. The old stone arches framed the couple, with their guests gathered close in the courtyard. Later, the festoon lights gave those same buildings a completely different feel for the night portraits.

Inside, the draped ceiling and fairy lights set the scene for the speeches and dancing. That change from an open-air ceremony to a warm, busy reception is part of what gives this wedding its character.

The dress, flowers and details

Flaura wore a Martina Liana dress from Eleganza Sposa, with flowers and styling by Vintage Gathering. Her hair was by Becky King, with make-up by Klaudii Beauty. MacGregor & MacDuff supplied the kilts, and Erin Rose Films captured the day on film.

A letter to the bridesmaids

One moment that stayed with me happened before the ceremony, when Flaura read a letter to her bridesmaids. It was emotional, personal, and a real privilege to be there to photograph that part of the morning.

Those are the moments I want a wedding gallery to hold onto alongside the big celebrations: the people around you and the little pauses that mean so much.

The speeches

I love photographing speeches because the story is happening all around the room. Here, there were plenty of jokes and huge laughs, alongside words that were personal to the couple.

I kept looking beyond the person with the microphone: Peter & Flaura laughing together, guests leaning towards one another, and the quieter reactions between the punchlines. Those photographs say so much about the atmosphere at the tables.

A ceilidh with Whisky Kiss

You can’t beat a wedding ceilidh, and this one with Whisky Kiss was off the hook. The dance floor was full of movement, laughter and people throwing themselves into it. You can’t beat a Dashing White Sergeant, can you?

We also stepped outside for portraits beneath the courtyard lights and a bottle spray to finish things off. A brilliant end to a day with so much heart.

Planning your wedding photographs at The Cow Shed Crail

The old stone buildings, courtyard and open farmland give you plenty of variety without having to leave the venue. These are a few things I’d think about when planning your photographs here.

Where can we take our portraits?

For Peter & Flaura, we used the courtyard, the paths beside the buildings and the grass beside the fields. I loved the stone arches as a backdrop, then the completely different feel out in the open. We also caught the colour in the evening sky. The light and weather will help us choose the spots on your day.

Will we still have plenty of time with our guests?

Absolutely. My approach to wedding photography is about letting you enjoy your day. We can keep the family photographs organised and take a short wander for portraits, with plenty of time for drinks and catching up. Tell me which photographs matter to you and we’ll fit them around your plans.

What if it rains?

We’ll plan around the indoor spaces available for your wedding and any breaks in the weather. The venue’s guide to its spaces shows the Barn, Workshop and Steading Marquee as well as the outdoor areas. I’ll work with your venue team so the photographs fit the way you’re using those rooms.

Do we need to go to Crail harbour?

Only if you fancy it. We stayed at the venue for Peter & Flaura’s wedding and had loads to work with. If the harbour is on your wish list, we can allow for getting there and back when we plan your timings. It’s worth weighing that up against how much time you’d like with everyone at the venue.

Can we have photographs after dark?

Yes, and I loved the courtyard for this. Peter & Flaura’s photographs under the festoon lights have such a different feel from their daytime portraits. A quick step outside between the dancing can give us another lovely part of the story.
