Peter & Flaura’s wedding at The Cow Shed Crail had such brilliant energy. A beautiful outdoor ceremony, a room full of laughter and a ceilidh that absolutely went for it—what a way to photograph my first wedding at this venue.

The feeling of the day

The couple walk between rows of cheering guests as confetti fills the air after the ceremony.

What I loved about this day was the mix of emotion and pure fun. There were moments to pause and take it all in, followed by big laughs and a party that kept everyone moving. Peter & Flaura had such a great crowd around them, and that comes through in the photographs.

Why I love photographing weddings at The Cow Shed Crail

The couple walk arm in arm through the stone courtyard, the bride carrying her bouquet.

This was my first time photographing a wedding at The Cow Shed Crail, and what a place. The stone buildings, little corners and open grounds gave us so much to work with. I loved being able to move between the courtyard and the surrounding landscape for very different photographs without losing the feel of the day.

We didn’t make it down to Crail harbour this time. Instead, we made the most of the venue itself, from portraits beside the old stone walls to a few quiet minutes out by the fields. It is somewhere I would love to photograph again.

The setting

The outdoor ceremony with Alex Moore was a highlight. The old stone arches framed the couple, with their guests gathered close in the courtyard. Later, the festoon lights gave those same buildings a completely different feel for the night portraits.

Inside, the draped ceiling and fairy lights set the scene for the speeches and dancing. That change from an open-air ceremony to a warm, busy reception is part of what gives this wedding its character.

The little things that made it theirs

Flaura wore a Martina Liana dress from Eleganza Sposa, with flowers and styling by Vintage Gathering. Her hair was by Becky King, with make-up by Klaudii Beauty. MacGregor & MacDuff supplied the kilts, and Erin Rose Films captured the day on film.

A moment to remember

One moment that stayed with me happened before the ceremony, when Flaura read a letter to her bridesmaids. It was emotional, personal, and a real privilege to be there to photograph that part of the morning.

Those are the moments I want a wedding gallery to hold onto alongside the big celebrations: the people around you and the little pauses that mean so much.

The speeches: every reaction tells a story

I love photographing speeches because the story is happening all around the room. Here, there were plenty of jokes and huge laughs, alongside words that were personal to the couple.

I kept looking beyond the person with the microphone: Peter & Flaura laughing together, guests leaning towards one another, and the quieter reactions between the punchlines. Those photographs say so much about the atmosphere at the tables.

A day worth celebrating

You can’t beat a wedding ceilidh, and this one with Whisky Kiss was off the hook. The dance floor was full of movement, laughter and people throwing themselves into it. You can’t beat a Dashing White Sergeant, can you?

We also stepped outside for portraits beneath the courtyard lights and a bottle spray to finish things off. A brilliant end to a day with so much heart.

Where can we have our portraits?

For this wedding, we used the stone courtyard, the paths beside the buildings and the grass beside the fields. Each gave the portraits a different backdrop. Later, we caught the colour in the evening sky before returning to the courtyard lights after dark.
