Natural wedding photography at Balbirnie House in Markinch, Fife — from the morning preparations to the last dance.

Steph and Calum, what a lovely wee family and what a day at Balbirnie House. The party started during the preparations and carried right through to The Big Papas at night. There were beautiful portraits, plenty of happy tears and a baby who was very much part of the celebrations. I loved being there with you all.

Getting ready at Balbirnie House

There is a lovely feeling arriving at Balbirnie House on a wedding morning. The house, the grounds and the light coming through the windows give us so much to work with, and this morning had the added bonus of a room full of laughter.

Steph looked beautiful in her dress from Brides in the City. Lauren Gilmour and Lynsay Gerry helped bring the bridal look together, with flowers from Fleur de Lis. Between the final touches, there was always a little moment happening with the baby or one of the girls. Calum and the boys were looking sharp too, ready for the ceremony.

A first look and a little family time

The first look was emotional. Those few seconds when someone sees you in your wedding dress are impossible to recreate, and I love giving them the space to happen.

Then there was Steph with her baby, all dressed and ready. It is easy to think of wedding photographs as the two of you, but these little family moments are a huge part of the story too.

A joyful wedding ceremony

George McLean delivered a ceremony full of warmth and humour. Steph and Calum had everyone smiling, with a few happy tears along the way. The light-filled room was a beautiful setting for it.

I photographed the vows and rings, then kept looking around for the reactions. The bridesmaids, the boys and the family all had their own moments. Their little one even found time for an adventure on the floor before joining them for the signing.

Confetti, friends and their wee family

Outside, the confetti came out and everyone got involved. We made time for the groups, with plenty of laughs from the wedding party, then a few photographs of Steph and Calum with their baby in the garden.

Sophie’s Childcare Services were part of the team on the day, and it was lovely seeing how naturally their little family fitted into the celebrations. These are the photographs that will mean even more as the years go on.

Relaxed portraits around the house

Balbirnie House makes it easy to create a varied set of portraits without travelling anywhere. The columns and steps give you those classic house photographs; turn a corner and you have gardens, paths and softer greenery.

Steph and Calum were brilliant together. A little walk, a laugh, a lift outside the house and a few quieter photographs beneath the veil. Nothing needed to feel complicated. We kept things moving so they could enjoy their guests as well as the photographs.

The speeches had everyone going

The napkins were up before the speeches had even begun. This crowd brought the energy, then the speeches gave us everything from huge laughs to a few tears at the top table.

Calum had Steph laughing one minute and wiping her eyes the next. I love a room like this, where you can look from table to table and find another reaction worth remembering. It was brilliant working alongside Something New Content to capture it all.

A few evening minutes in the gardens

We headed back outside for a little evening air and another wander through the grounds. The garden bench, the flowering tree and the steps all gave us a different feel from the earlier portraits.

A short break together can be lovely in the middle of a busy wedding day. You do not need to disappear for ages to come back with a set of photographs you love.

The Big Papas and a sparkler finish

The Big Papas are one of the best, and they had this crowd ready to go. After the first dance, there were family dances, big hugs and friends filling the floor.

We finished outside with sparklers on the steps. A lovely end to a day that had been full of life from the very start. Steph and Calum, thank you for having me along. What a team.

Planning your photographs at Balbirnie House

David and the team were fantastic on the day: organised, helpful and keeping everything running smoothly. That makes a real difference when you are trying to enjoy your wedding and fit photographs naturally around it.

Balbirnie House has beautiful indoor spaces and gardens, with ceremony options including the Orangery, Long Gallery and outdoor settings. The hotel was named Best Wedding Hotel on a Global Level at the 2026 Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards, and it is easy to see why couples love it. If you are planning your day here, I would love to hear what you have in mind.

The front steps and gardens give us plenty of variety without a long trip away from your guests. I would keep a short list of family photographs, then leave a little breathing room for a walk together around the house.

If it rains, we can work with the window light indoors and watch for a break outside. Evening portraits are always an option rather than an obligation: a few relaxed minutes when the light is right can be all we need.
